These two passages are Holy Spirit’s “job description” and purpose.
John 14:26 (AMPC), Jesus’ words; “But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name (in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf), He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.”
John 16:13–15 Jesus continues; “But when the truth-giving Spirit comes, He will unveil the reality of every truth within you. He won’t speak on His own, but only what He hears from the Father, and He will reveal prophetically to you what is to come. He will glorify Me on the earth, for He will receive from Me what is Mine and reveal it to you. Everything that belongs to the Father belongs to Me—that’s why I say that the Divine Encourager will receive what is Mine and reveal it to you.”
The term “disciple” from the Koine Greek word “mathetes” means “pupil of a teacher” or “apprentice to a master craftsman.” In English by way of Latin (discipulus), it means “learner” the more common being “student.”
When the disciples of Jesus traveled preaching and teaching the “Good News,” new Christians received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4, 8:14 – 17, 10:44 – 46 and 19:5). Receiving Holy Spirit means to: 1. take something that is offered, given, committed, sent, paid for, to accept. 2. To gain the knowledge of, take into the mind, to give admission to, permit to enter. 3. To take in, to hold, to contain, to have capacity for. 4. To be affected by, to suffer, to be subjected to.
In ‘Forgotten God,’ Francis Chan writes; “You don’t need the Holy Spirit if you are merely seeking to live a semi-moral life and attend church regularly. You only need the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help if you truly want to follow The Way of Jesus Christ. You only need Him if you desire to obey everything He commanded and to teach others to do the same. You only need Holy Spirit if you have genuinely repented and believe. And you only need Holy Spirit if you understand that you are called to share in Christ’s suffering and death as well as His resurrection. If you truly believe and have turned from the way you were headed and joined a different Way of living, then you desperately need Holy Spirit. You know you cannot live this Way without Holy Spirit in you.” (page 122).
