The Nature of God

The Scriptures actually give us 2 different views of God. God has not changed but
there was a period of time that God “held men’s sins against them.” This is similar
to raising children. Parents realize that young children cannot be reasoned with in
the same way older children can, therefore they must be disciplined. Young
children learn that certain actions will bring punishment.
In the Old Testament people were not born-again and didn’t have the spiritual
perception that is available under the New Covenant. God gave laws and enforced
them with punishment, sometimes even death, to deter people from sin. This
may give some persons today the impression that God is harsh and unloving.
Romans 5:13 says; “Sin was in the world before Moses gave the written law but it
was not charged against them where no law existed” (TPT). That is, there was no
ability to be charged and found guilty of breaking a law that wasn’t there. That’s
an amazing statement! Why is this important?
The New Covenant teaches that God extends His love toward us while we are
living in sin, not after we have “cleaned up our act.” The Apostle Paul in Romans
5:8 put it this way; “But Christ proved God’s passionate love for us by dying in our
place while we were still lost and ungodly!” (TPT)
One of the great truths of the Gospel that will change our lives is to understand
that God loves us just like we are. He loves us so much that if we receive His love,
we won’t want to stay as we are; we will change. This change is a byproduct of
God’s love, not in order to get His love.
God does not condone sin, He hates it because He knows that it will steal,
slaughter and destroy our lives. Jesus came to give us life and life more
abundantly! (See John 10:10). The overall nature of God has always been, love.
